The 2028 Honda CR-V is shaping up as the biggest change to America’s favorite Honda in years, but most of what’s out there is still reporting, not fact. Honda hasn’t shown the next CR-V or even confirmed its name. What it has done is spell out the hybrid hardware coming in 2027. Here’s what Honda has confirmed and what’s only reported, including the hybrid-only claim and the April 2027 production date.
What’s confirmed
Honda has made its next-generation hybrid plans official, though it hasn’t said which models get them first:
- A new hybrid system starting in 2027. On October 9, Honda announced that its next-generation two-motor system will be called “Honda Hybrid.” The company plans 15 next-generation hybrid models globally by the end of March 2030, mainly for North America.
- New platform, electric AWD and better mileage. At its May 2026 business briefing, Honda said the new hybrids get an all-new platform and a newly developed electric AWD unit. It’s aiming for more than 10% better fuel economy. Honda’s US release adds a 30% cut in system cost.
- Today’s CR-V is the baseline. The 2027 CR-V starts at $31,520 for a gas LX with the 1.5-liter turbo. Hybrids start at $36,030 for the Sport Hybrid and top out at $42,950 for the Sport Touring Hybrid, before a $1,550 destination charge. The Sport Hybrid with front-wheel drive is EPA-rated at 43 city, 36 highway and 40 combined mpg. With AWD, it’s rated at 40/34/37.
Honda hasn’t said the CR-V will be one of the first of the new hybrids, or when the next one goes on sale.
What’s rumored or reported about the 2028 Honda CR-V
Hybrid-only, with production starting April 2027. Car and Driver, citing Automotive News, reported on October 7 that the next CR-V will be sold only as a hybrid. The report also says Honda pushed the start of production to April 2027 so it can build more of the current model first. That would mean no gas-only LX, EX or EX-L. Honda is also reportedly dropping its plan to build the next Civic in Greensburg, Indiana, which would free that plant for the CR-V.
A new 2.0-liter engine. Carscoops, citing Nikkei Asia, reported in September that the CR-V would be the first model with the new system. The report describes a new direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder, new electric motors and the Prelude’s S+ Shift simulated gearshifts. In an October 19 preview, MotorTrend floated a version of Honda’s 1.5-liter turbo instead, but presented it as a possibility, not a report.

A debut in early 2027. MotorTrend says the 2028 CR-V will reportedly debut sometime in early 2027. It also expects the switch to electric AWD to help close the fuel-economy gap with the all-hybrid Toyota RAV4, and expects a TrailSport version to return. Whether Honda brings a plug-in hybrid CR-V to the US is still an open question.
A new look. In August, a camouflaged CR-V-sized prototype was photographed near Honda’s plant in Ontario. Drive reported that it had a full-width rear light bar instead of the vertical taillights used on every CR-V generation so far, plus a new front end with thin, high-mounted running lights. Honda hasn’t confirmed that the test car is the CR-V.
How much weight do these reports deserve? The production timing and hybrid-only plan come from Automotive News, a well-sourced trade publication, and the new hybrid hardware matches what Honda itself has announced. Those reports are solid but still unconfirmed. Details like the engine size, screen sizes and trims are mostly educated guesses.
2028 Honda CR-V release date and price: what to expect
Honda hasn’t announced a release date or pricing. Our own estimate, not a report: if production starts in April 2027, a reveal in the first half of 2027 and dealer arrivals in the second half would be a normal timeline. With the gas model reportedly gone, the cheapest CR-V would likely be a hybrid. Today’s least expensive hybrid is the $36,030 Sport Hybrid, more than $4,000 above the gas LX. Honda’s promised 30% hybrid cost cut is the thing to watch.
