General Motors is leaning hard into its core strengths. During the company’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call, Chairman and CEO Mary Barra made it clear that the fully redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will extend GM’s leadership in the full-size truck segment, while GM Defence contracts and the expanding GM Insurance business provide more stable, less cyclical revenue streams.

The message was straightforward: keep dominating trucks, broaden the revenue base beyond traditional auto sales, and position the company for stronger results in 2026 and beyond.

2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Arrive in December

The next-generation light-duty trucks are scheduled to reach dealerships in December 2026. Barra said current sales momentum for the existing Silverado and Sierra should carry over, with further gains expected once customers can buy the redesigned models.

GM already leads the full-size truck market when Silverado and Sierra volumes are combined, and the company has been selling essentially everything it builds without heavy incentives. The new trucks represent a complete inside-and-out redesign focused on improved ride quality, greater power, better durability, and higher towing capability.

New Gen VI Small-Block V8s and Broader Powertrain Lineup

A major highlight is the introduction of GM’s sixth-generation small-block V8 engines. The 5.7-liter V8 replaces the previous 5.3-liter, while the new 6.6-liter V8 takes the place of the outgoing 6.2-liter. These join an upgraded 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder (now paired with a 10-speed automatic) and the available Duramax 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six, which will be offered even on entry-level Work Truck models.

Official Chevrolet and GMC materials confirm the four-engine lineup and emphasize improved power, torque, and refinement. Production of the new V8s will take place at plants in Flint, Michigan; Tonawanda, New York; and St. Catharines, Ontario. The trucks themselves will be assembled at three plants, with additional capacity increases planned for full-size SUVs.

Expanded Super Cruise Availability

Technology plays a bigger role than before. Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance will be available on more trims, including as standard equipment on higher-end versions. GM expects the new trucks alone to generate roughly 160,000 incremental Super Cruise subscriptions. The system now includes trailering capability on compatible roads, a feature GM positions as a competitive differentiator.

Building Non-Cyclical Revenue: GM Defence and Insurance

Barra highlighted two growing businesses that are less tied to the traditional auto cycle.

GM Defence is scaling up. The U.S. Army is expected to purchase more than 10,000 Chevrolet Colorado-based Infantry Squad Vehicles. GM is also working with the U.S. State Department, Secret Service, and international customers including Canada, Qatar, and Brazil. In addition, the company will supply battery propulsion technology for a next-generation lunar terrain vehicle. Management projects GM Defence will contribute about $700 million in revenue this year and is building a backlog of higher-margin business.

GM Insurance has expanded to 21 states, covering roughly 60% of U.S. vehicle sales, with plans to reach 80% coverage. The company also expects to add about 1 million OnStar subscribers this year.

These units give GM revenue streams that are not fully dependent on consumer vehicle demand or economic swings.

Q2 Context and Forward Outlook

The comments came against a backdrop of mixed but overall constructive second-quarter results. Global revenue rose 1.9% to $48 billion. North American profits jumped 43% to $3.45 billion, with operating margins above 8%. Net income declined due in part to continued electric-vehicle related charges, but GM raised its full-year adjusted earnings guidance to $14–16 billion.

Barra summed up the longer-term view: “GM will be stronger in 2026 than it was in 2025 and the subsequent years will be even stronger.” The company is also preparing next-generation Cadillac models with internal combustion engines for launch starting in spring 2027, while focusing resources on high-volume and high-margin nameplates such as the Corvette and Escalade.

What It Means for the Truck Market

The redesigned 2027 Silverado and Sierra arrive at a time when full-size trucks remain one of the most profitable and competitive segments in the U.S. industry. By combining a comprehensive redesign, new V8 powertrains, expanded hands-free technology, and continued production capacity, GM is signaling confidence that it can defend and grow its position against the Ford F-Series and other rivals.

At the same time, the parallel push into defense contracts and insurance shows a deliberate effort to diversify earnings. For customers, the near-term story is practical: more capable, refined, and technologically equipped trucks arriving at the end of 2026. For investors and industry observers, the bigger picture is a company balancing its traditional truck strength with new sources of growth that are less exposed to the auto cycle.
