Several US buyers with a Model Y L Zen Grey order say a new prompt showed up in the Tesla app Thursday night. It says their six-seat SUV “will now be configured with a Zen Grey textile dashboard wing,” and the only button on the screen reads “Proceed With Delivery.” Tesla promoted suede dash trim when it launched the Model Y L Launch Series, so some owners are calling it a downgrade. Tesla hasn’t said anything publicly about the change, and we couldn’t confirm why the notice went out. What follows comes from owner screenshots and forum posts.
What’s confirmed
Tesla opened US orders for the Model Y L on July 2 with a single trim, the Premium AWD Launch Series, at $61,990. Not a Tesla App’s rundown of the launch lists two interior choices, All Black or Zen Grey, both with a black headliner. It notes that the Model Y L was the first US Tesla offered with Zen Grey, which had been limited to cars built in Shanghai. Its list of Launch Series extras includes “soft suede dashboard inserts,” along with special badging, floor mats, puddle lights and sill plates. EVwire’s launch brief also lists “suede dash inserts” and captions one of Tesla’s launch photos with “A suede dashboard wing gives an extra dash of premium.”
Waits have also gotten longer. On Oct. 18, TeslaNorth reported that new Launch Series orders in the US now show January to March 2027 delivery, up from January to February. Some existing orders show February to April. Not a Tesla App says some buyers who ordered in July were pushed back three to four months.
We haven’t found a Tesla statement, press note or published spec change about the Model Y L dash trim.
What’s rumored or reported about the Model Y L Zen Grey dash
Owners started reporting the notice around 8 p.m. ET on Oct. 22. A thread on r/ModelYL began with a buyer asking, “Anyone else get this message?” Within a few hours, about a dozen people said they’d gotten it too. One buyer near Philadelphia said they ordered on July 19. Another said they already had a VIN and an Oct. 31 delivery appointment. A second thread on r/TeslaModelYL called it “a downgrade from the launch edition suede dashboard wing.”
Screenshots posted on X match. A Bay Area owner shared the “Order Updates” screen and said suede is now limited to the black interior. An owner in Ohio wrote that “there’s no option to decline,” so accepting is the only way to keep the order moving. A Michigan buyer with a February-to-April delivery window posted the same prompt. Several people in the Reddit thread said accepting it didn’t change their estimated delivery date.
The complaints didn’t start this week. In late September, early Zen Grey owners posted photos showing cloth, not suede, on the dash. In a Sept. 30 “suede wing gate” thread, one buyer said a Tesla rep told them the listing only promised a “dashboard wing.” The same buyer said Tesla’s site later added a note that the suede image showed the black interior only. We couldn’t independently confirm that the site was edited.
How much does this change? Owners disagree. One r/ModelYL commenter said the order page already says the suede wing comes with the black interior only, so Tesla is “just closing a gap” that doesn’t change the car. Another guessed Tesla wants buyers to formally acknowledge the textile trim after the September complaints. Both readings fit the screenshots. Neither has been confirmed, and Tesla hasn’t explained the notice.

Have a Model Y L on order? What to do now
- Open your order page in the Tesla app or on tesla.com and look for “Accept Order Changes.” Every owner who has described their build so far has the Zen Grey interior.
- If the suede trim was part of why you bought the Launch Series, ask your Tesla advisor in writing before you accept. Owners say the prompt only offers “Proceed With Delivery.”
- Don’t expect accepting it to speed up delivery. Owners who accepted say their delivery estimates stayed the same.
- Screenshot your original order summary and the new notice so you have a record of what changed.
