Mercedes-Benz has given its flagship S-Class (W223) the most extensive mid-cycle refresh in the model’s history. Unveiled in late January 2026 to mark 140 years since Carl Benz invented the automobile, the updated S-Class features more than 50 percent newly developed or re-engineered components — roughly 2,700 parts. The changes span design, digital architecture, powertrains, suspension, and cabin technology while preserving the S-Class’s core identity as the benchmark luxury sedan.
Production of the refreshed model began at the Sindelfingen plant (Factory 56) in 2026. Customers could configure and order it from the end of January 2026 in key markets, with global rollouts continuing through the year.
Exterior: Bolder Presence and Signature Lighting
The front end receives the most noticeable revisions. The radiator grille is approximately 20 percent larger, now illuminated and finished with redesigned three-dimensional chrome stars. An optional illuminated standing Mercedes star appears on the bonnet for the first time, integrating into the overall light signature.
New twin-star DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps use micro-LED technology. They deliver roughly a 40 percent larger high-resolution illumination field, brighter high beams, and an Ultra Range high-beam function with a claimed reach of up to 600 metres. The lights can project patterns and warnings onto the road. Redesigned taillights incorporate chrome-framed three-pointed star motifs, and an optional side-sill light projector displays “Mercedes-Benz” lettering beside the car.
AMG Line exterior elements become more widely available or standard in several markets, paired with new multi-spoke alloy wheels (including 20-inch designs). MANUFAKTUR personalisation expands with more than 150 exterior colours, including new shades such as Black Sparkling (with glass-flake clearcoat) and Verde Silver Magno.
Interior: MBUX Superscreen and Rear-Seat Boardroom
Inside, the previous vertical portrait screen is replaced by the MBUX Superscreen. A 14.4-inch central touchscreen and 12.3-inch passenger display sit under a single continuous glass panel, while the driver retains a freestanding 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster (optionally with 3D effect). The system runs on the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) supercomputer architecture, supporting over-the-air updates and deeper integration of vehicle functions.
The AI-powered “Hey Mercedes” virtual assistant advances significantly, incorporating large language models for more natural, multi-turn conversations. Rear passengers benefit from dual 13.1-inch high-end entertainment screens with HD cameras that support video conferencing via Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Webex. Detachable smartphone-style remote controls manage climate, shades, and entertainment. Additional rear features include wireless and high-power USB-C charging, a refrigerated compartment, temperature-controlled cupholders, and optional folding tables — positioning the cabin as a genuine “boardroom on wheels.”
Other comfort upgrades include heated front seatbelts (up to 44°C), an advanced ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL system that filters fine particles, dual wireless smartphone charging pads, and expanded MANUFAKTUR options (over 400 interior colours). High-end Burmester 4D surround sound with Dolby Atmos remains available.
Powertrains: Refined Electrified Range and a New Flat-Plane V8
Every engine in the lineup has been revised for better response, efficiency, refinement, and emissions compliance (including preparation for stricter standards). All feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator.
- The 3.0-litre turbo inline-six (M256 Evo) powers S 450 and S 500 models. Outputs rise in torque (up to 600 Nm, with overboost to around 640 Nm on higher variants) while maintaining strong refinement.
- The standout change is the new M177 Evo 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 in the S 580. It adopts a flat-plane crankshaft (a notable shift from the previous cross-plane design) along with revised injection, intake/exhaust ports, camshafts, and turbocharger components. Power reaches approximately 530–537 hp with 750 Nm of torque. Acceleration improves (0–100 km/h in roughly 4.0 seconds in some configurations) while smoothness and efficiency also gain.
- Plug-in hybrids (S 450 e and S 580 e) receive stronger electric motors and system outputs (S 580 e around 576–585 hp combined in some markets) with electric ranges typically cited near or above 100 km.
- Diesel variants (S 350 d / S 450 d) continue in select markets with efficiency-focused updates, including electrically heated catalytic converters.
All pair with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. Exact figures vary by market and measurement cycle (WLTP or others).
Chassis and Driving Dynamics
Standard AIRMATIC air suspension now includes intelligent damping that can adjust in advance for speed bumps or surface irregularities using sensor and Car-to-X data. Optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL further elevates comfort. Rear-axle steering is standard at 4.5 degrees and optional at up to 10 degrees, reducing the turning circle (especially useful on the long-wheelbase version) while improving high-speed stability.
Advanced driver assistance expands under the MB.DRIVE suite, with more capable cameras, radars, and computing power for features such as proactive lane changes, enhanced parking, and (in select markets) higher levels of automated driving assistance subject to regulations.
India Market: First PHEV S-Class and Pricing
In India, Mercedes-Benz launched the facelifted S-Class in June 2026 exclusively as the S 450 e plug-in hybrid at launch. It combines a 3.0-litre turbo inline-six with an electric motor and 22 kWh battery for a combined output of approximately 435 hp and 680 Nm. Claimed pure-electric range reaches up to 115 km (WLTP), with 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and a claimed efficiency of around 32.2 kmpl. Fast charging (10–80 percent) is possible in about 20 minutes with a compatible 60 kW DC charger.
