Volkswagen has officially unveiled the second-generation Atlas Cross Sport for the 2027 model year. The five-seat midsize SUV arrives as the sportier, more design-focused counterpart to the three-row Atlas, with a completely redesigned exterior, a significantly upgraded interior, and a more powerful turbocharged engine.

Built on an updated MQB Evo platform at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, the new Atlas Cross Sport is scheduled to go on sale in early 2027. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Exterior Design: Athletic Stance and Modern Details

The 2027 Atlas Cross Sport measures 195.6 inches in overall length — 5.4 inches shorter than the regular Atlas — and sits 2.1 inches lower. A dramatically raked rear roofline and coupe-like pillars give it a more athletic profile while maintaining practical midsize proportions.

Key exterior updates include:

  • Stacked LED headlights with available double lightlines
  • Illuminated VW badge on all trims except the base model
  • Stronger fenders and a sharper character line along the body
  • Flush-mounted tailgate that integrates cleanly with the rear bumper
  • Full-width taillight design
  • Body-color rocker panels and distinctive silver exterior accents that help differentiate it from the three-row Atlas

Wheel options start at 18 inches on the base model, with 20- and 21-inch aluminum-alloy designs available on higher trims. New exterior colors include Dark Sage Metallic, Blackberry Metallic, and Sandstone.

Interior: Premium Materials and Comfort Upgrades

The cabin takes a clear step upmarket. A large architectural loop spans the dashboard, complemented by soft-touch surfaces, available wood trim, contrasting stitching, and ambient lighting. Three interior color themes are offered: Pebble Grey, Black, and Medium Brown.

Seating is limited to five passengers. Standard equipment includes a revised 12-way power driver’s seat with improved four-way lumbar support. Higher trims add thigh support and full-back massage functions for both front seats. Leatherette is standard on entry models, while upper trims receive Varenna or Nappa leather.

Other standard or widely available features include a power liftgate with Easy Open, rear-door sunshades, auto-dimming driver’s-side mirror, and front and rear Park Distance Control.

Technology and Features

Infotainment is a major focus. The base model receives a 12.9-inch touchscreen, while approximately 90 percent of the lineup gets a larger 15-inch display. Every model includes a 10.3-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster.

A new Driver Experience Dial on the center console controls audio volume, drive modes, and Atmospheres settings. Wireless charging has been upgraded to the Qi2 standard and supports two phones at once. Five USB-C ports are spread throughout the cabin.

Driver-assistance systems have been enhanced, including available Park Assist Plus. A Premium connected services subscription (via myVW+) bundles navigation with real-time traffic, generative AI-powered voice assistance, premium radio, Wi-Fi hotspot, and additional connected features.

Powertrain: More Horsepower and Expected Efficiency Gains

Under the hood sits the latest evo5 version of Volkswagen’s EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Equipped with a variable-geometry turbocharger, it produces 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque — a 13-horsepower increase over the previous Atlas Cross Sport.

Power is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual shifting. Front-wheel drive is standard, with 4Motion all-wheel drive available across the lineup. Maximum towing capacity remains 5,000 pounds when equipped with the factory trailer hitch.

Volkswagen expects improved fuel economy despite the added power. Official EPA figures have not been released, though estimates based on the related Atlas suggest roughly 25 mpg combined for front-wheel-drive models and around 23 mpg for all-wheel-drive versions. A hybrid powertrain is planned for a future mid-cycle update.

How It Compares to the Regular Atlas

The Atlas Cross Sport prioritizes style and everyday usability over maximum passenger capacity. By dropping the third row, it gains a lower, more dynamic silhouette and retains generous second-row space and cargo capacity for a family of four or five. It shares the same updated platform and powertrain as the three-row Atlas but presents a distinctly sportier character.

Availability and Outlook

The 2027 Atlas Cross Sport is expected to arrive in showrooms in early 2027. Exact trim structure and pricing will be detailed closer to launch. Expected trims follow the familiar SE, SE Tech, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line progression seen on related models.

With sharper looks, a more refined interior, useful technology upgrades, and a modest power increase, the new Atlas Cross Sport strengthens Volkswagen’s position in the competitive midsize two-row SUV segment. It offers a practical yet stylish alternative for buyers who do not need three rows of seating.
