Tesla Robotaxi San Antonio Launch Soon? A Cybercab Was Reportedly Spotted Driving in the City

A short X video appears to show a gold Tesla Cybercab driving in San Antonio, one day after Tesla named the city as a Robotaxi market that's coming soon. Tesla hasn't set a launch date. Here's what's official and what's fan speculation.

Is a Tesla Robotaxi San Antonio launch about to happen? A short video posted on X on the evening of October 22 shows a gold Tesla Cybercab driving in San Antonio, a day after Tesla added the city to its Robotaxi “coming soon” list. JoshWest247, a Tesla fan account, shared the clip and wrote that a Robotaxi launch there “is imminent.” A smaller account, Teslas.R.Us, reposted it and described the car as being on a highway. We couldn’t independently confirm where or when the clip was filmed, and Tesla hasn’t announced a San Antonio launch date. So the sighting is plausible, but the “imminent” part is a fan’s guess.

What’s confirmed

San Antonio is officially on Tesla’s list. Tesla published its first Robotaxi Safety Report on October 21, hours before its third-quarter earnings call. As TeslaNorth and Not a Tesla App reported, the page lists Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Phoenix and San Antonio as “coming soon.” The official Robotaxi account on X posted the same four cities. Tesla gave no launch dates and didn’t say whether those cities will start with safety monitors on board.

Tesla has also been laying groundwork in the city for months:

  • A dispatch lot near the airport. On September 3, the San Antonio City Council approved a zoning change for about an acre at 171 Heimer Road, near San Antonio International Airport, that could let Tesla use the site for robotaxi parking and dispatch, We Walk San Antonio reported. A second proposed site on W. Josephine St. near Pearl was pulled before a final council vote and remains unresolved.
  • Cybercabs already parked there. In mid-September, KSAT 12 found several gold Cybercabs in a lot off Heimer Road near Highway 281 and Bitters Road. KSAT asked Tesla when passengers could ride and didn’t get a date.
  • Texas comes first. Tesla already runs driverless Robotaxi rides in Austin, Dallas and Houston, plus Miami, Orlando and Tampa in Florida. On the earnings call, Tesla said unsupervised Cybercab rides open to the public in Dallas next month, per Not a Tesla App.

What’s rumored or reported

The new clip is about 16 seconds long. JoshWest247 posted it on October 22 at about 7:34 p.m. Central with the caption “Cybercab just spotted in San Antonio!” and quoted Tesla’s coming-soon post. Teslas.R.Us later called it “a gold Cybercab driving on a highway in San Antonio” and suggested San Antonio “could be Texas city number four.”

Here’s why we’d treat the “launch is imminent” claim with caution:

  • Cybercabs in San Antonio aren’t new. Gold Cybercabs have been parked near the airport since at least mid-September, according to KSAT. A car driving around town fits a testing or mapping phase as easily as a launch.
  • We don’t know who was in it. The posts don’t say whether a Tesla employee was aboard or whether the car was carrying riders.
  • Sightings have outrun launches before. Cybercabs have been spotted in cities from Las Vegas to New York. Some of those cities still have no public service.

Our credibility read: medium for the sighting, low for the timing. A Cybercab driving in San Antonio is entirely believable given the staging lot. Whether rides start soon is something only Tesla can confirm, and it hasn’t.

Tesla Robotaxi San Antonio: when could rides start?

There’s no official date. The signs to watch are an update to Tesla’s Robotaxi page or app adding San Antonio, local permits or construction at the Heimer Road site, and any word on whether the city starts with Cybercabs or retrofitted Model Y robotaxis. San Antonio riders already know driverless rides: Waymo launched there in February, then paused passenger service after an empty car was swept into floodwater on April 20, according to We Walk San Antonio. Tesla’s local launch will likely face the same weather questions.

We also covered Robotaxi app code that reportedly lets owners enroll their own cars and an earlier Cybercab fleet sighting in Las Vegas. We’ll update this story when Tesla sets a San Antonio date.
