Is the BMW i4 discontinued? Yes, in the US. BMW confirmed to Car and Driver that 2026 is the i4’s final model year, and the new electric i3 sedan is its effective replacement. The i3 50 xDrive starts at $61,500 plus $1,350 destination and arrives in the first quarter of 2027. The i4 name may come back later. BMWBlog reports that two-door i4 Coupe and Convertible models are planned for around 2028. Here’s what that means if you’re shopping for one now.

What’s confirmed
- 2026 is the i4’s last model year. BMW representatives confirmed this to Car and Driver at the i3’s reveal in March 2026.
- The i3 replaces it. BMW’s official line is that the i3 is the i4’s effective replacement. Product chief Bernd Körber said the i3 is “more or less a successor to the i4,” BMWBlog reported.
- The i3’s US price and timing: $61,500 plus $1,350 destination for the i3 50 xDrive, with a US launch in Q1 2027, according to BMW’s US press release. BMW quotes 463 hp, 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, 446 to 468 miles of estimated range and 400-kW DC charging.
- Why BMW is doing it: Car and Driver points out that the two cars overlap almost exactly in size. The i3 is one inch shorter, half an inch wider and 1.3 inches taller than the i4. The i3 also has far more range.
- A hint about the future: Körber told Car and Driver there could be room later for a model that “more closely captures the i4’s sportier, more coupe-like essence.” BMW didn’t give a timeline.
What’s rumored or reported
- When the last US i4 is built: BMWBlog says BMW hasn’t announced an exact US cutoff and that late 2026 is the reported timing. BMWBlog separately reported that it’s hearing “potentially late 2026 for the U.S. market.”
- A two-door i4: BMWBlog reports that BMW is working on a Neue Klasse-based i4 Coupe and i4 Convertible, both expected around 2028. BMW hasn’t confirmed either.
- Price for a future i4: Car and Driver’s forward-looking page for the 2029 i4 estimates $55,000 to $63,000. That’s C/D’s projection, not BMW’s.
- No direct Gran Coupe successor: BMWBlog says BMW isn’t expected to bring back a four-door i4 Gran Coupe, because the i3 sedan already has a similar tapered roofline.

BMW i4 discontinued: the i4 vs. its i3 replacement by the numbers
| 2026 BMW i4 (outgoing) | 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive (replacement) | |
|---|---|---|
| US starting price | From $59,250 (Car and Driver listing) | $61,500 + $1,350 destination (BMW) |
| Trims | eDrive40, xDrive40, M60 (BMWBlog) | 50 xDrive at launch; M60 later in 2027 (BMW) |
| Max range | 318 mi (C/D, single motor) / up to 333 mi EPA (BMWBlog, eDrive40) | 446-468 mi BMW estimate |
| Top power | 593 hp (M60, BMWBlog) | 463 hp at launch |
| 0-60 mph | 3.6 s (M60, BMW claim via BMWBlog) | 4.5 s (BMW) |
| DC fast charging | N/A | Up to 400 kW (BMW) |
| Body | Four-door hatchback (“Gran Coupe”) | Four-door sedan with a trunk |
Note on i4 range: Car and Driver cites 318 miles for the most efficient single-motor i4. BMWBlog says the eDrive40 gets “up to 333 miles of EPA range.” Car and Driver’s model listing shows an EPA range of 278-333 miles across the i4 lineup. The gap likely comes down to wheel and trim choices. Check the window sticker on any specific car.
The i4’s short US run, in dates
- 2022 model year: The i4 goes on sale in the US as an electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe (Car and Driver).
- 2024-2025: The i4 becomes BMW’s best-selling EV in the US, ahead of the iX, which sold 15,383 and 12,587 units in those years (Car and Driver).
- 2026 model year: The top M50 becomes the M60 with 56 more horsepower. The lineup settles on the eDrive40, xDrive40 and M60.
- March 2026: BMW confirms 2026 is the final model year.
- Late 2026 (reported): US sales wind down.
- Q1 2027: The i3 50 xDrive arrives in the US.
- Around 2028 (reported): A two-door i4 Coupe and Convertible.
Should you buy a leftover BMW i4?
The i4 isn’t a bad car. BMWBlog calls it proof that an electric BMW can drive like a BMW, and Car and Driver notes it has been BMW’s best-selling EV in the US. So the question is mostly about price.
Buy a 2026 i4 if you can get a meaningful discount off the roughly $59,000 starting price, you want the hatchback’s big cargo opening (the i3 has a conventional trunk), or you want the M60’s performance now rather than waiting for an i3 M60 later in 2027. Dealers clearing out a discontinued model are often motivated to deal. That’s general market behavior, not a quote, so get offers from several dealers.
Wait for the i3 if range matters. BMW’s estimate of up to 468 miles is more than 100 miles beyond any i4. The newer 400-kW charging hardware and NACS port also mean less time at public chargers. And at $61,500, the i3 costs only a little more than an i4 before any discounts.
Think about resale. A discontinued EV built on an older platform may lose value faster than the new i3. We can’t put a number on that yet. If you plan to keep the car for a long time, it matters less. If you trade in every three years, it matters more, and leasing a run-out i4 is worth pricing.
