
Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the third-generation GLA, launching first as a pure electric model on its new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) platform. The GLA Electric (sometimes referred to as GLA with EQ Technology) replaces the previous EQA and brings class-competitive range, ultra-fast charging, and high-end tech into the compact luxury SUV segment.
U.S. deliveries are scheduled for the second half of 2027 as a 2028 model year vehicle. European markets begin receiving the car later in 2026, with pricing starting from approximately €48,600 in Europe and £45,400 in the UK. U.S. pricing has not been confirmed but is expected in the mid-$40,000s to low $50,000s range depending on trim.

A lower-spec GLA 200 with a smaller LFP battery is also planned for some markets.

Design: More Expressive and Slightly Larger
The new GLA features a more dynamic, muscular stance with a longer wheelbase (approximately 2,790 mm / +61 mm) and overall length of about 4,565 mm. It gains a sportier profile while improving interior space.
Standout exterior elements include:
- The new “iconic” illuminated grille (first in the compact segment) with 158 micro-LEDs and 608 backlit light points that can animate in sequences
- Optional Intelligent Light System with the Mercedes star integrated into the daytime running lights
- Flush door handles for better aerodynamics
- Drag coefficient of 0.27
- Optional Sky Control electrochromic panoramic roof that switches between clear and opaque in 10–20 milliseconds (with segmented control and integrated star lighting)
Electric models also gain a useful frunk of about 107 liters.

Interior & Technology
The cabin adopts the latest MMA design language shared with the CLA and GLB. A floating “Superscreen” setup includes a 10.25-inch driver display and 14-inch central touchscreen, with an optional third passenger display.

Mercedes positions the GLA Electric as a software-defined vehicle with over-the-air updates and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. Full unsupervised self-driving is not available.

Performance, Battery & Charging
Both higher-volume models use an 85 kWh usable NMC battery pack and an 800-volt electrical architecture. This enables peak DC fast charging of up to 320 kW. Mercedes claims the system can add roughly 140–168 miles (or up to 270 km in some market claims) of range in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions.
The dual-motor GLA 350 4MATIC delivers 349 hp and strong acceleration, while the single-motor GLA 250+ prioritizes efficiency and range. An optional semi-electric tow bar allows up to 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) of braked towing capacity on the AWD model — one of the higher figures in the compact EV SUV class.
Availability & Market Context
- Europe: Orders open immediately in some markets; deliveries begin later in 2026.
- United States: Second half of 2027 (2028 model year).
- India: No official timeline yet. Given Mercedes-Benz India’s typical strategy, expect a CBU or limited CKD launch sometime after the European rollout, likely in late 2027 or 2028. Pricing in India would place it in the premium compact EV segment against rivals such as the BMW iX1, Volvo EX40, and upcoming local competition.
Mild-hybrid petrol versions (1.5-liter turbo with 48V system) will follow the electric models.
How It Stacks Up
The GLA Electric targets buyers who want Mercedes branding, a compact footprint, and strong real-world usability without stepping up to the larger GLC Electric or EQE SUV. Its claimed WLTP range of over 400 miles and 800V charging put it ahead of many current competitors on paper, though real-world EPA figures are expected to land closer to 350 miles.
The combination of rapid charging, solid towing capability, and high-end cabin tech makes it a strong contender in the growing premium compact electric SUV segment.
Mercedes has not yet released final U.S. EPA ratings or full pricing. Official specifications and configurations will be refined closer to launch.
